The buzz around messaging app security – Blockchain enables businesses to participate

With Wikileaks making recent news by claiming to reveal how the CIA is able to hack TVs and phones, media attention has also turned to the security of messaging apps. Yesterday CNN published an online article on security holes found in the chat app “Confide.” Confide is an app, similar to WhatsApp or Signal, claiming utter security primarily achieved through encryption.

All of these apps use “end-to-end encryption,” which should ensure that only the communicating users can read the messages transmitted. Encryption takes the plain text and during transmission turns it into a scrambled form, making it impossible for an interceding party to make sense of. The message is then changed back to its original form upon arrival at the intended recipient.

Encryption makes messages unreadable to all unintended third parties.

With normal encryption, the security risk would remain that the service provider could access the decrypted data at their servers. However, end-to-end encryption keeps the data encrypted even when it reaches the server, so that even the service provider cannot do anything with the data. Hence, the “ephemerality” claim of such messaging apps – transmitted messages will disappear forever, becoming completely inaccessible.

When ephemerality is a major disadvantage

This is great for private messaging, but what happens when communication is taking place in a setting where the ability to safely recall data could be important? Many businesses necessitate secure communication that evades the possibility of attacks and leaks by third parties, but may also find them selves in the position where data can be recalled to maintain transparency.

Blockchain offers businesses end-to-end encryption with the same level of security, without deleting messages forever, but rather ensuring that they can be recalled securely. With Blockchain, messages will be saved permanently, but will never be located on a central server making them subject to manipulation and available to service providers. Central servers also leave the risk that when it is compromised, all data is lost.

How Blockchain solves the problem

Traditional Database vs. Blockchain

Traditional Database vs. Blockchain

With Blockchain messages are stored in a decentralized and thus highly available database and remain encrypted so that only authorized entities are granted access.  Businesses will never have to worry that they will be unable to recall necessary communication.

faizod is committed to enhancing business processes using the advantages of Blockchain. With our highly secure Blockchain implementation Vooledger, we have created a messaging system called VooMessenger that ensures that mission critical communication remains secure and will not be tampered or lost.
