The beginning of Blockchain-based supply chain

According to a news article, the Cologne-based company GS1 has plans to launch a labeling system using source code for fruits and vegetables. This system would provide a means for customers to inform themselves about the cultivation of a product and its ingredients. The launch is planned for later this year and the company has already marketed barcodes for the collection and labeling of meat and fish.

With the implementation of Blockchain, GS1’s vision for transparency for consumers of fruits and vegetables could become a widespread reality for all food products.

Massive data required in supply chain for food products

The company recognizes the increasing complexity of supply chains for food products. Reaching beyond sheer information on cultivation, the transportation process for food products alone requires a greater level of transparency and monitoring of appropriate conditions (temperature, time of delivery, humidity, etc.).

A massive amount of data becomes involved when transparency (and thus, greater safety) are the goal. Supply chain management based on Blockchain technology could be the answer to managing such data.

How a Global Supply Blockchain could ensure transparency

Data collected from food products in cultivation and transportation could be written into a Global Supply Chain, where products could be identified at all times. This would ensure the best use of global resources, reduce costs by optimizing transport routes, and minimize the risks to companies through forecasting and better planning.

With Blockchain, middlemen are eliminated and every product can be tracked without interruption. The progress of a product from production to the end of the product life cycle would become traceable without any gaps.
