Containers are again being transported with trucks rather than ships. The reason for this is that the ports in Antwerp and Rotterdam have been dealing with enormous delays due to overload. The waiting times have currently reached as much as 120 hours, resulting in a delay in the loading and unloading of the freight.
Delays shift transportation to the streets
Due to the delays in the large seaports, the inland watercourses are no longer able to meet their timetables and thus, the freight has shifted to the road. This is by no means beneficial to the environment, but is easing up congestion at the terminals
According to Niels Dekker, spokesman of the container terminal Rotterdam WorldGateway (RWG), the large sea ports are at 90% capacity, which is due to a large increase in the turnover volume and restructuring of the industry.
How Blockchain could help
In the context of supply chain management, the Blockchain could help to eliminate challenges such as the backwater in ports and the resulting additional costs due to long waiting times. Through efficient planning because of more transparency in the process flow, container ships could navigate and communicate with each other on their journey through the water themselves.
Electronic wallets the future of cargo shipping
Each step would be documented in a Blockchain database. With their own “wallets” (electronic wallet), they could easily reduce their high administrative costs by managing themselves. The real-time processing of loading and unloading is carried out via SmartContracts and thus contributes significantly to the increase of efficiency and reduction of the complexity of processing sequences.
The existing bodies responsible for monitoring would then be dispensable for these tasks and could shift their focus to address other challenges.
